In
this study we are going to examine some aspects of the
1 Samuel 8:7
7 The LORD said to Samuel, "Listen to the voice of the people in regard to all that they say to you, for they have not rejected you, but they have rejected Me from being king over them.
1 Samuel 8:19-22
19
Nevertheless, the people refused to listen to the voice of Samuel, and they
said, "No, but there shall be a king over us,
20
that we also may be like all the nations, that our king may judge us and go out
before us and fight our battles."
21
Now after Samuel had heard all the words of the people, he repeated them in the
LORD'S hearing.
22
The LORD said to Samuel, "Listen to their voice and appoint them a
king." So Samuel said to the men of
God approves the wishes of the Jews by delivering the reign of His people down to a human king. Remember that Christ is later said to sit on David’s throne which is God’s throne…

"He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High; and the
Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David;
33 and He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and His kingdom will have no end."
The angel therefore prophesies to Mary that Christ will reign on the throne. We’ll see more about the timing and nature of the fulfillment of this prophesy later in the lesson.
The temple is another aspect of the kingdom that bears consideration.
Before
1 Chr 22:5-10

David said, "My son Solomon is young and inexperienced, and the house that
is to be built for the LORD shall be exceedingly magnificent, famous and
glorious throughout all lands. {Therefore} now I will make preparation for
it." So David made ample preparations before his death.
6
Then he called for his son Solomon, and charged him to build a house for the

7
David said to Solomon, "My son, I had intended to build a house to the
name of the LORD my God.

name, because you have shed {so} much blood on the earth before Me.

give him rest from all his enemies on every side; for his name shall be

King David decided that God deserved a permanent dwelling place and his son, Solomon built a permanent temple to be the dwelling place of God among His people.
So, what do we see to this point about the status and nature of the
Christ is very clearly prophesied as the king of
Daniel 7:13-14

"I kept looking in the night visions, and behold, with the clouds of
heaven One like a Son of Man was coming, and He came up to the Ancient of Days
and was presented before Him.
14
"And to Him was given dominion, glory and a kingdom, that all the peoples,
nations and {men of every} language might serve Him. His dominion is an
everlasting dominion which will not pass away; and His kingdom is one which
will not be destroyed.
It is also clear from this passage that the
John 18:36
36 Jesus answered, "My kingdom is not of this world. If My kingdom were of this world, then My servants would be fighting so that I would not be handed over to the Jews; but as it is, My kingdom is not of this realm."
It should be clear from this scripture that Christ knew His kingdom was not to be physical on the earth. He very plainly alludes to the spiritual nature of His reign and kingdom. We should therefore be looking for the same in our study of the scriptures. Jesus further illustrates this point in Luke.
Luke 17:20-21

Now having been questioned by the Pharisees as to when the

Jesus’ language could not be more clear.
Another
very important prophesy about the
Zech 6:12-13
12
"Then say to him, "Thus says the LORD of hosts, "Behold, a man
whose name is Branch, for He will branch out from where He is; and He will
build the temple of the LORD.
13 "Yes, it is He who will build the temple of the LORD, and He who will bear the honor and sit and rule on His throne. Thus, He will be a priest on His throne, and the counsel of peace will be between the two offices."'
There are a couple of important things to note in this passage. First, it is said that Christ will “build the temple of the Lord”. Isn’t there already a temple? We’ll consider the nature of this statement later. More importantly for the purposes of this lesson, it is also said that he will be a priest on His throne.
Hebrews 8:1-5
1
Now the main point in what has been said {is this:} we have such a high priest,
who has taken His seat at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the
heavens,
2
a minister in the sanctuary and in the true tabernacle, which the Lord pitched,
not man.
3
For every high priest is appointed to offer both gifts
and sacrifices; so it is necessary that this {high priest} also have something
to offer.
4
Now if He were on earth, He would not be a priest at all, since there are those
who offer the gifts according to the Law;
5 who serve a copy and shadow of the heavenly things, just as Moses was warned {by God} when he was about to erect the tabernacle; for, "SEE," He says, "THAT YOU MAKE all things ACCORDING TO THE PATTERN WHICH WAS SHOWN YOU ON THE MOUNTAIN."
Again the Hebrew writer makes it very clear that the reign and priesthood of Christ is not a physical one. He would not be a priest at all if He were on the earth! Is this simply because the current priests are “in the way”? Is something going to change so that Christ could in fact be priest on the earth? No! Verse 5 says that these things are a mere “copy and shadow” of the heavenly things and we’ve already seen that Christ’s kingdom is heavenly, not earthly. Verse 6 also says that Christ’s ministry is better as it’s enacted on a better covenant. Why would Christ return to the earth physically to serve an inferior covenantal system? He would not and we’ve already seen that He’s said as much!
We now see that the nature of the fulfilled kingdom is a spiritual one. We’ve also seen that Christ is the king of this kingdom while at the same time being priest. So, when do the scriptures say that this eternal kingdom will be established? The very thrust of Christ’s teaching is that the kingdom of heaven is at hand (Mark 1:14-15 et al.). As we like to say, if something is “at hand”, it is not yet, but right around the corner.
Matthew 16:27-28
27
"For the Son of Man is going to come in the glory of His Father with His
angels, and WILL THEN REPAY EVERY MAN ACCORDING TO HIS DEEDS.
28 "Truly I say to you, there are some of those who are standing here who will not taste death until they see the Son of Man coming in His kingdom."
The immanency of this passage cannot be overlooked. Christ would return
within the lifetime of His own peers to fully establish the kingdom.
Let’s compare a couple of prophesies that detail the destruction of
Zech 2:1-13
1
Then I lifted up my eyes and looked, and behold, {there was} a man with a
measuring line in his hand.
2
So I said, "Where are you going?" And he said to me, "To measure

Luke 21:5-31
5
And while some were talking about the temple, that it was adorned with beautiful
stones and votive gifts, He said,
6
"{As for} these things which you are looking at,
the days will come in which there will not be left one stone upon another which
will not be torn down."
7
They questioned Him, saying, "Teacher, when therefore will these things
happen? And what {will be} the sign when these things are about to take
place?"
8
And He said, "See to it that you are not misled; for many will come in My
name, saying, "I am {He} 'and, "The time is near.' Do not go
after them.
9
"When you hear of wars and disturbances, do not be terrified; for these
things must take place first, but the end {does} not {follow}
immediately."
10
Then He continued by saying to them, "Nation will rise against nation and
kingdom against kingdom,
11
and there will be great earthquakes, and in various places plagues and famines;
and there will be terrors and great signs from heaven.
12
"But before all these things, they will lay their hands on you and will
persecute you, delivering you to the synagogues and prisons, bringing you
before kings and governors for My name's sake.

"It will lead to an opportunity for your testimony.

"But you will be betrayed even by parents and brothers and relatives and
friends, and they will put {some} of you to death,
17
and you will be hated by all because of My name.
18
"Yet not a hair of your head will perish.
19
"By your endurance you will gain your lives.
20
"But when you see

and they will fall by the edge of the sword, and will be led captive into all
the nations; and

27
"Then they will see THE SON OF MAN COMING IN A CLOUD with power and great
glory.
28
"But when these things begin to take place, straighten up and lift up your
heads, because your redemption is drawing near."
29
Then He told them a parable: "Behold the fig tree and all the trees;

as soon as they put forth {leaves} you see it and
know for yourselves that summer is now near.

"So you also, when you see these things happening, recognize that the
There are many comparisons that can be made between these two passages.
There many other points that could be seen if we had the time to cover them
all. We’ll simply deal with some of the more obvious statements. Verses 6-9 in Zechariah deal with the persecution of the saints
(“the apple of His eye”) and the destruction of the city of
We’ll close by looking at Mathew 25 as it is the summary for the lesson in a nutshell.
Matthew 25:31-34
31
"But when the Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the angels with Him,
then He will sit on His glorious throne.
32
"All the nations will be gathered before Him; and He will separate them
from one another, as the shepherd separates the sheep from the goats;
33 and He will put the sheep on His right, and the goats on the left.
34 "Then the King will say to those on His right, "Come, you who are blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.
This is the fulfillment of Daniel 7. When the Son of Man comes, THEN he
will sit on His glorious throne! Then the king says to His people, “inherit the kingdom”. The kingdom is clearly completed
in it’s eternal state when Christ returns to reign as
the king and to present the kingdom to His people as an inheritance.
We’ve already proven these things to be spiritual in nature as Christ Himself
said they would be! We’ve shown that these things happened in the
destruction of
